About the artist

Antonín Hála

1895 Karlov (Kutná Hora)1952 Brno

A Czech painter, printmaker and illustrator whom Max Švabinský himself considered the finest artist of social graphics: he survived the First World War on the eastern front and from 1920 studied at the Prague Academy as Švabinský's favourite pupil. Alongside prints of the city and its periphery he painted landscapes and rural scenes; his wife was the painter and ethnographer Helena Salichová, and a monograph has been devoted to his turbulent life. The Harvest in our collection shows his painterly, landscape register.
