The Tatras

Original title: “Tatry”

Ján Grotkovský

1902 Ruský Kazimír1961 Košice

About the work

Tatras — the artist's second view of the high mountains in the collection, this time from close by and from the foothills: grey-blue peaks under heavy clouds, a dark wall of spruces beneath them and, in the foreground, a rocky mountain stream. Oil on cardboard, 58.5 × 67.5 cm.

The smaller format and the directness of the handling point to work in the open air. With this piece Grotkovský reaches six paintings and remains one of the pillars of the collection's Tatra section.

Further details about the work are being added.

About the artist

Ján Grotkovský

1902 Ruský Kazimír1961 Košice

A painter who sold goods until his fifties — while forging a landscape idiom of his own: born in Ruský Kazimír, he took his first lessons from Dezider Orosz and privately from Elemér Halász-Hradil, working as a sales representative until 1950 before devoting himself fully to painting. His economical landscapes, from the High Tatras to the East Slovak Lowland, live on broken colour and silvery light; he held solo shows in Žilina (1938) and Prešov (1960), and 47 of his works are catalogued today by the Slovak National Gallery's Web umenia. With six paintings he is one of the pillars of our Tatra collection.
