Harvest

Original title: “Žatva”

Július Nemčík

1909 Lipníky1986 Bratislava

About the work

A large harvest scene from 1941 — a high wagon loaded with grain, a team of horses and figures of reapers in a wide summer landscape with a band of blue hills on the horizon. This large canvas from the artist's early years, still from the time of his Prague studies, ranks among his most representative genre works; it is offered in an ornate black-and-gold frame.

About the artist

Július Nemčík

1909 Lipníky1986 Bratislava

From a joiner's plane to the title of National Artist: born in Lipníky near Prešov, he trained as a joiner, received his first art lessons from E. Rákosi and M. Jordán — and graduated from the Prague Academy in 1936–1942. After the war he co-founded the Košice society Svojina, studied in Paris in 1948 and from the mid-1950s worked in Bratislava. A member of the „generation of 1909“, influenced by Cyprián Majerník's brushwork, he painted the countryside, harvests and a cycle on Captain Nálepka; in 1973 he received the title of National Artist. The Harvest in our collection belongs to his core peasant subjects.
