About the artist

Ľudmila Hynková

1908 Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou1988 Prague

A doctor of law with a brush in her rucksack — a painter who carried her canvases straight onto the ridges of the High Tatras. Born in Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou, she began law at Charles University; when the Protectorate closed the universities she turned to painting, training under Professor Jakub Obrovský at the Prague Academy, finished her law degree after the war — and gave her life to the mountains, joining the JAMES mountaineering club and the MAROLD artists' society in 1948.

She painted the High Tatras on the spot, from the Ganek Gallery, below Vysoká and Kriváň; over 440 of her works are recorded at auction and interest keeps growing. With eighteen works, from Winter in the Tatras to the Stone Pine, she is the most numerously represented artist of our collection.
