Jaroslav Votruba

„The painter of the High Tatras“ — a Czech who tied his life, and his final resting place, to the mountains: born in Prague-Uhříněves, he passed through the School of Applied Arts under Jakub Schikaneder, taught drawing in Moravia and from 1919 in Slovakia — and anchored for good beneath the Tatra peaks. He not only painted the Tatras but wrote about them, publishing The Tatras Through a Painter's Eyes (1944) and Spring in the High Tatras (1947). He died in Kežmarok and is buried in Tatranská Javorina; the Icy Mountain Stream in our collection is the essence of his lifelong love.
