Jozef Teodor Mousson
1887 Hőgyész–1946 Trenčín
„The painter of the Zemplín sun and its people“: born in Hőgyész in Hungary, he studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts under Ede Balló (1905–1909), passed through the Művészház scholarship and the Nagybánya colony — and in 1911 settled in Michalovce, to which he stayed faithful for thirty-three years, painting from 1931 in a villa at Hrádok leased to him by Count Sztáray.
His luminist plein-air grew into a sensuous, hedonistic painting of markets, church feasts and peasant life — sun-drenched canvases such as The Blessing of the Waters on the Laborec (1922) are kept today by the Zemplín Museum in Michalovce. Our scene In the Park belongs precisely to this world of light.
