Peter Michal Bohúň

Portraitist of the Štúr generation and painter of the Slovak People's Assembly. The son of a Lutheran pastor from Veličná in Orava, he passed through the lyceum in Levoča and law studies in Kežmarok before entering the Prague Academy in 1843 under the history painter Christian Ruben; after his father's death he was supported by the Orava nobleman Michal Kubín. He joined the Štúr movement, painted its members' likenesses — the best known is Ján Francisci as a Volunteer Captain — and in 1863 was among the founders of Matica slovenská.

From 1854 he taught drawing for eleven years at the Lutheran girls' school in Liptovský Mikuláš; in debt, he left in 1865 for Galician Lipnik near Biała, where he painted altarpieces and portraits and where he died. The Liptov Gallery in Liptovský Mikuláš has borne his name since 1955, and a statue of him by Fraňo Štefunko (1958) stands in Bratislava.
