This expressive oil by the leading figure of Košice modernism is the most significant work of 20th-century Slovak painting in the collection. The work is framed.

About the artist
Anton Jasusch
1882 Košice–1965 Košice
The solitary visionary of Košice modernism: born in Košice on 25 April 1882, he died there on 2 July 1965. The trauma of the First World War and Russian captivity fuelled his peak of 1920–1924 — monumental figural-abstract cycles on the fate of man and the cosmos, such as the Circle of Life (Pilgrimage of Souls) in the Slovak National Gallery; around 1930 came unsettling mask compositions, and his late work turned to pastels of family and music.
His stature was confirmed by the Bratislava City Gallery's major retrospective 'Anton Jaszusch: Painter and Visionary' (2007, 81 works), restaged at the East Slovak Gallery in Košice. The Bankov Forest in our collection captures the favourite outing hill of Košice — the city he remained bound to all his life.
