Coastal Landscape with a Port City and Boats
1676 Belluno–1730 Venice
About the work
A vast, harmoniously composed coastal veduta — a fortified city with towers and bell towers overlooking the sea, a rocky cove with boats and small figures in the foreground, and mountain ranges dissolving into the silvery tones of the background. The composition unfolds in depth through a modulated succession of perspective planes, and the whole canvas is enveloped in a diffused, natural light — it is precisely these experiments with light and atmosphere that number among the innovations Marco Ricci brought to landscape painting, heralding eighteenth-century Venetian vedutismo.
The work comes from a prestigious Austrian private collection and bears a historical attribution to the circle of Marco Ricci, confirmed by striking compositional and stylistic affinities with the master's autograph works — from the tree motif and the rocky spur in the foreground to the characteristic light effects, now fully legible after a recent conservation cleaning. This Old Master work of nearly three hundred years is sold in excellent condition, in a gilded frame and with a certificate of authenticity.
