Houses by the Water

Original title: “Domy pri vode”

Ladislav Zdvíhal

1913 Trebišov1997 Trenčín

About the work

Houses by the Water — an atmospheric landscape of a waterside hamlet under a dramatic clouded sky, mirrored in the surface. The expressive, dense hand and muted blue-grey tonality punctuated by red roofs place the work among the striking registers of 20th-century Slovak landscape painting; Ladislav Zdvíhal was a respected artist tied to the Trenčín circle and the legacy of Bazovský. Signed; an oil in an ornate gilt frame, ready to hang, it brings a more expressive, moody landscape into the collection.

About the artist

Ladislav Zdvíhal

1913 Trebišov1997 Trenčín

The painter of Trenčín and its surroundings, without whom the artistic life of the town would be hard to imagine. A native of Trebišov, he graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts in Bratislava (1927 – 1930, window-dressing department) and settled in Trenčín in 1941; he came fully to painting only in the 1950s under the guidance of Ľudovít Bránsky and above all Irena Slavinská. He started from a realist vision, his domain being the landscape in the changing seasons and moods; besides painting, drawing and printmaking he took part in more than ninety monumental-decorative commissions all over Slovakia.

Web umenia today records 194 of his works, mostly in the collection of the Miloš Alexander Bazovský Gallery in Trenčín, and his paintings regularly appear at Slovak auctions. Houses by the Water in our collection shows his more expressive, monotype side.
