About the work
Morning — a female nude in a sanguine red-brown tone: a half-length figure with raised arms and head tilted back, drawn with a single flowing contour against a densely hatched ground. A print of 2003; the title inscribed in the artist's hand in the lower margin, beside a red monogram seal and the signature.
Morning is a print from an edition of ten, marked as an artist's proof. Together with Dusk it broadens the collection's holding of works on paper, until now made up only of watercolours and pastels by earlier artists.

About the artist
Martin Zbojan
b. 1960, Michalovce
A contemporary Slovak painter, printmaker and teacher. Born on 7 February 1960 in Michalovce; after the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Košice (1975 – 1979) he studied figural painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under professors Karel Souček and Radomír Kolář and printmaking under Ladislav Čepelák (graduating in 1986). Since 1991 he has taught at the University of Prešov, where he defended his doctorate in 2003; as an art historian he focuses on Košice modernism and the art of the 1960s.
He has more than twenty solo exhibitions to his name; in painting he combines the lessons of the old masters — chiaroscuro, symbolism, spatial composition — with elements of pop art and collage, and works in acrylic as well as oil. The works represented in our collection were part of the exhibition Contemporary Slovak Art in Brussels (4 – 27 May 2007).
