Ľudovít Csordák

A co-founder of Košice modernism and one of eastern Slovakia's most refined landscapists: born in Košice to a tailor's family, he reached Munich and then the Prague Academy (1889–1895) — Julius Mařák's famous landscape school — thanks to the patronage of the Baronesses Melczer, joining the Mánes association in 1895 and co-founding Budapest's Nemzeti Szalon in 1907.
His lifelong subjects were forest interiors, clearings and castle ruins in oil, pastel and charcoal; the Prague exhibition „Mařák and His Pupils“ (1929) brought him wide recognition, and at auction his works reach thousands of euros, the record being €9,100 for an Autumn Landscape. The pastel Return from Pasture in our collection represents exactly this lyrical register.
